Gestures

On the iPad you may control apps using your fingers on the screen. These are known as "gestures". The possible gestures for iPad apps are:

tap
one or more fingers briefly touching the screen
long-press
one or more fingers touching the screen for some number of seconds
pinch
two fingers moving closer together or farther apart
panning or dragging
one or more fingers touching the screen, while the screen or objects on the screen move in response.
swiping
one or more fingers briefly moving across the screen.
rotating
two fingers moving around a point between them.

Tap, long-press, panning/dragging and swiping may all be done with one or more fingers, and different actions may be triggered by different numbers of fingers.

ArtShow uses several of these gestures in editing and presenting SlideShows.

In editing a SlideShow, in "Arrange" mode Slide Objects may be dragged to change location and size. In "Edit" mode a long-press on an object brings up a menu with options for changing the Slide Object.

Most other special ArtShow controls also involve long-presses or they use triple taps with one finger.

When presenting a SlideShow interactively in Lecture mode, images and web pages use their standard iPod gestures to zoom in and out, pan, and if web links are active, browse the web.

In portrait orientation, a control panel is shown, with information and SlideShow control buttons: next slide, previous slide, toggle between ArtShow instructions and instructor notes, and go to media collection for this SlideShow.

When the iPad is in Landscape orientation the control panel is hidden, and gestures are used for control. The one to remember is a "triple tap", one finger tapping three times quickly in the same spot.

Tapping on the left is equivalent to the "previous slide" button, tap on the right for "next slide". Tapping on the top or bottom brings up the control panel; use the hide panel button (downward arrow) to dismiss it.

In addition, a one finger long-press on an image shows that image full screen.

When an image is being presented fullscreen, a long-press with one finger dismisses it, a long-press using two fingers brings up an overlay with the caption and other information about the media object, and a long-press with three fingers brings up the GlassBoard.

The GlassBoard allows you to paint over the image by touching and dragging with one finger. A long-press brings up a menu for controlling the line width and color, clearing the screen, or exiting the GlassBoard.

Pressing the "Show Media Collection for This SlideShow" button brings up a menu of all media objects collected in this SlideShow. Selecting and image shows that image full screen on the iPad and any external display; dismiss it with a long-press on the iPad. Selecting a movie shows that movie full screen with player controls, or if an external display is attached, the movie is shown on the external display with a movie player control on the iPad.
