See about and workflow for an introduction.

Media

Can images and movies be in any format?

ArtShow supports any image and movie formats which can be used in the iPad Photos app. So jpeg, gif, png, tiff and a few less common image formats may be used. See "How big should my images be?" below for hints on image size and resolution.

Video support is more limited on the iPad, but any movies generated on an iPad or iPhone, or any which have been converted and play in the Photos or Videos apps should work. These will usually be .mp4, .mov, or .m4v files.

How To Edit

What is a 'long-press'?

A long-press is one or more fingers touching the screen for some time. Touch a spot on a SlideShow, image, or other object and leave your finger there. This commonly brings up a menu of actions which may be used on the selected item.

Text Fields

The keyboard is covering where I'm typing

That's not in the form of a question. Fortunately this isn't Jeopardy!. And fortunately on the iPad, you can move the keyboard.

See the "Keyboard Layouts" section of http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/ipad_user_guide.pdf for details, or http://ipad.about.com/od/ipad_basics/ss/Ipad-Keyboard-Settings-Help_4.htm for a quick intro.

Web Pages

What are some uses for the Web page Slide Object?

In addition to images and movies, text, and shapes, slides may include areas for displaying web pages.

These may be set to open links by opening Safari, or links may change what is shown in the web page area.

You may use this to show a web page related to the topic, or you may use a small area which serves as a convenient launching point for opening a web site in Safari for a lecture section based on that site.

Images

How big should my images be?

You can use any resolution you like, but beware that the memory on an iPad is limited, and large files can be slow to load and make your slide slow to appear.

The maximum resolution of an external display is about 1000 pixels high. ArtShow does allow you to use high resolution images and zoom in to show more detail, but take the limitations of display resolution and file size into consideration. For example, several images on a slide each of which is 5 megabytes works OK, but there but there is a noticeable pause as the images are loaded. Try to use images smaller than a megabyte.

Controlling the show

What do I have to remember?

ArtShow is not like many other slide presentation apps. In ArtShow, you interact with images, movies, and webpages within the slide. For example you can pinch-zoom an image to show more detail, and pan through the zoomed image. So special gestures are needed for ArtShow's control. We use three taps.

Just remember "three". Three taps on the top or bottom bring up the control panel, if it is not already shown. Three taps to the right moves to the next slide, three taps to the left brings up the previous slide.
